How Do You Know If You are Experiencing Impostor Syndrome?
As common as it is, Impostor Syndrome can be hard to identify at first. It isn’t a “diagnosis” but rather a group of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that cluster together and have a significant impact on your emotional functioning. These Impostor Syndrome behaviors and thoughts commonly feed feelings of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and frustration.
And you don’t experience Impostor Syndrome all the time — rather these feelings are brought up by your Impostor Syndrome triggers. Typical triggers include, a new job, a new or complex project, highly visible situations where you feel scrutinized or doing something you haven’t done in a while makes you feel “rusty.”

It’s Not Your Fault, But You Can Take Back Control

There’s always an origin story behind Impostor Syndrome — a story written by your unique experiences and circumstances.

Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) & How to Silence Them
Often Impostor Syndrome triggers automatic negative thoughts that reinforce behaviors and feelings related to your Impostor Syndrome. For example, if you make a mistake, you can have a catastrophizing ANT that tells you, “that was horrible – everyone can see you are not capable of taking up leadership on this project." Working on recognizing your ANTs, labeling them and learning to counter them, helps you to develop a positive tape around triggers and turns the volume down on the ANTs and how they affect your experience of your competence.

In her TEDx talk entitled, "The Impostor Syndrome Paradox", which has been viewed by tens of thousands, Dr. Lisa shared her own experience of feeling stuck in her career due to Impostor Syndrome.
